With the brand new N900 on the way, this October, Nokia has finally showed its true potential. Although it is not a Symbian phone it does however promise to be a hit.

Gifted with a 5 MPx camera and a wapping 32GB internal memory, the N900 is the first real threat to Apple’s iPhone. With a new and shiny OS, the Maemo 5, this handset is by far the most advanced device Nokia has released so far.

With its 256 Mb of RAM, an ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz CPU and the PowerVr SGX Graphics Adapter the N900 this device brings mobile computing a step further.

And here is a small preview of the new N900 with Maemo 5.

Nokia going into the portable PC business

After the latest news of the Nokia Booklet 3G has stunned the world, I wondered how great would an E75 look with that netbook.

Nokia Booklet 3G brings the world of netbook computers to a new age. The A-GPS is a perfect tool on your netbook. With the large screen and faster processing speed, imagine how would the OVI Maps 3D look on it.

This may be the first step that Nokia has made into innovating rather than improving. And I must say from the looks of it they did a pretty good job. Also I must add that this is the best commercial I have seen from Nokia in a while.

Now let us have alook at what the wonderfully gifted Nokia Booklet 3G has to offer.

Your E75

e97 01 150x150 Your E75As we all know by now the E75 has won the EISA Award for Best Business Phone. But it still far from being the best phone out there.

The E75 may have some glitches and bugs, but it still very sturdy built. For many months I have been thinking of ways to improve the handset, thus the What If? category. And since Symbian Brainstorm is up and running and it needs all the help it can get.

So, I thought we should lend a hand to the guys from Symbian in hopes of developing a better Symbian UI and a better business phone. If you know photoshop or any other picture editor software, than build your very own E75. It doesn’t have to have the same look as the original, or even the same name. You can name your creation,eg.:E75 Second Edition or E75 Me.

With the pictures please add as many details as you can. Like how big the camera should be, or how much memory and most important how the UI should look like. Every week I will make a post of your emails, but I will take note only of those that have pictures and notes. They do not have to look like a post, a list of things that your E75 should do is enough.

Dual Mode vs GSM Mode

nokia e75 front 150x150 Dual Mode vs GSM ModeI have been asked which is better dual mode or GSM mode. So here is a small tutorial about this feature that we have.

Why am I loosing signal when I enter a building? Well considering that not many phones have had 3G in the past, the current infrastructure for this type of connection is quite weak. So, at times you might seem to be loosing signal but that is nothing to worry because GSM kicks in.

When should I keep my phone on dual mode ? Most of us keep dual mode on because they have an Internet connection on their mobile device. If you do not have one and just use Wi-Fi wherever you can find it, than GSM should work fine for you. Another downside is the battery consumption, dual mode does that a lot faster than GSM mode.

What about GSM mode? Talkers should really switch that off because it will improve time of talking by an hour or so. Also, this goes out to those of you who like texting.

Ok, lets recap. I have told you about the difference between 3G and GSM, the conclusion is simple. Do not use dual mode unless you have an Internet connection. For talking and texting select GSM mode it will work better for you.

How do I switch between dual mode and 3G? In the main menu select Tools, then Settings. Now go to Phone and then Network, after this just select Network Mode and switch between the two modes.

YELLIX:facebook your calls

fb illu kl YELLIX:facebook your callsFacebook is one of the most popular social sites along with Twitter and MySpace. YELLIX is the app that brings Facebook to your phone.

YELLIX not only brings Facebook to your phone it takes it to the next level. It enables you to view the profile picture and status of your Facebook friends. It uses a popup that displays a profile picture, the phone number and status of your friend.

All you need is a 3G connection and a Facebook profile. Although, this may may prove to be a costly app because of all the charges that the carrier might apply to you for internet. If you have an internet data plan and you don’t use it that this is one of the many ways to do that.

Of course this only works if your friend has a phone number defined in his or hers profile. This is a great idea, but I do not use Facebook so I wish there was one for Twitter.

Mobile GPS vs GPS Device

Here is a dilemma I have been having for a long time. Which is better Mobile Phoes GPS or  Classic GPS Devices. Until, a couple of weeks a go I didn’t have the time or technology to pull that off.

a gps example1 150x150 Mobile GPS vs GPS DeviceAs we all know most mobile devices come with A- GPS, including our beloved E75. A-GPS stands for Assisted Global Positioning System and it is assisted by your Internet connection. Why do you need A-GPS on your mobile device, you might ask yourself. But, if you live in a country that is quite new to this technology (such as mine), you will need Internet to discover nearby satellites.

Actually,  the Internet connection is the difference between the two devices. The traditional GPS has no Internet connection, so at times it might loose connection. But, that is where the A-GPS kicks in downloading your coordinates from the Internet thus boosting your signal. However, this problem can be easily fixed with an external GPS signal booster antenna.

The advantages with the traditional GPS device is that it has a big screen at a lower cost than a GPS phone. The biggest disadvantage is the software. Most of those work on their own software, which can make installing other software very hard, sometimes even impossible.  During such an operation you might just brick your device. I tried to do it and when I saw what it took I installed Garmin Mobile XT on my phone.

realtime diff GPS 150x150 Mobile GPS vs GPS DeviceInstalling a mobile GPS software on a Nokia phone, in our case the E75 is very easy. Even cracked versions of those software can be found on any forum or tracker. Just google what you need and the solution will come. So, after testing the two devices, I was stunned to see that my phone had pinpointed me although I was inside a building. While the traditional GPS showed no signal at all. Even as I stepped outside the no signal. I had to walk 50 meters to get a GPS signal.

To sum up, A-GPS with a decent software is far better that traditional GPS. Losing signal when you need it most can be a bummer. So, my advice to you is o get a GPS software for your phone and enjoy the ride.

Hard reset your phone

nokia e75 qwerty phone 150x150 Hard reset your phoneIf you have problems with your phone, errors that do not seem to go away then maybe it is time for a hard reset. Before you do that remember to backup all your data.

When hard resetting your E75 you will loose all your data that is stored on your internal memory. Maybe that is why Nokia still makes such low memories. But, that is another topic for another post. The Nokia E75 has been known to have problems with bluetooth. But, at least it has bluetooth ( a sucker-punch for iPhone users).

As I found from personal experience, hard resetting might fix a lot of incompatibility issues and also frees a lot of your memory. For the E75 might just fix your faulty connection , so you might take that into consideration. Despite some of you might think, hard reset is different than soft reset. A soft reset is easy, it just restores the phone to its initial state, the one you bought it like. A state that may have some data, predefined by the seller.

However, hard reset restores your phone to its basic settings. The one that Nokia made for your phone, or for that version of Symbian. Hard reset is a great tool for your E75. Especially, if you just updated your phone and some of the features stopped working or it is working very slow.

Furthermore, after an important update I recommend to hard reset. Why do I say that? Well, just like you I own a Nokia phone and I updated (two to be more precise). And, after a few updates the phone became leggy and my apps crashed on me. Plus, my internal memory was at an all time low, although I used my memory card to store everything. So I decided it was time for a hard reset.

After, the hard reset the phone had a lot of memory free and the speed was excellent. It just took like half a second to access menu and navigation was very fast. My apps started acting normal, although I had to reinstall most. Nokia makes great phones but sloppy software. So, guys and girls keep in mind that from time to time a hard reset might do a lot of good. Think of it as a clean slate, for your E75, a new beginning.

To conclude, I would like to remind you to play safe and backup your data. Also, I think it is abouy time to tell you how to do the hard reset. Just enter *#7370# and press Yes, for soft reset *#7380# and if your phone wown’t power on Power+*+3.
